At Bestheat.co.uk we specialise in supply & installation of central heating systems and replacement boilers. With over 20 years experience, we offer you an expert advice on a wide range of central heating services, from condensing boilers to the very latest in renewable technologies.

Who knows central heating better than a company dedicated to one thing?

Vaillant enjoy a reputation as Europe's No. 1 and UK most widely used boiler (it accounts for 70% of the boilers in British homes). Manufacturing since 1874, Vaillant have two Best Buy recommendations from “Which?” magazine for their ecoTEC range and recently won two prestigious CORGI Awards.

Older type boilers tend to waste a lot of valuable energy, with many converting as little as 60% of your expensive gas into useful heat. By comparison a condensing boiler from Bestheat.co.uk can achieve conversion rate of up to 98% – producing annual savings of £285.00 per year*.

As Vaillant approved installers, we now offer an exclusive 5 years warranty on boilers fitted by us - enjoy complete peace of mind and saving of up to £1000.00 on the cost of a typical extended warranty scheme.

The Scottish Boiler Scrappage Scheme started on Monday 24th May and finished in 24hrs! At BestHeat.co.uk we're committed to make a real change. That's why we're offering £400.00 savings across all Vaillant boilers installed and commissioned by us. You do not need to have G rated boiler to take advantage of this offer! Solar water heating – what is it?

Solar water heating or solar thermal, is about using free energy from the sun to produce domestic hot water for showers, baths and hot taps. Solar thermal technology should not be confused with photovoltaic (solar electric) panels which produce electricity from sunlight.

Hot water accounts for a significant proportion of the overall domestic energy consumption. Under UK conditions, a household can easily produce approx 60% of the hot water it needs over the course of a year from solar.

How does solar thermal work?

Typical solar system components are as follows:

  • solar collectors (tubes or panels, usually mounted on a roof)
  • pump connected to a controller
  • hot water cylinder with two heating coils (twin coil cylinder).

Power of sunlight is used to heat fluid (antifreeze) that circles in the collectors. When fluid in the collectors is hotter than the water in the cylinder then the controller activates the pump to pump the fluid through the coil in the cylinder, thus heating water in the cylinder for showers and hot water taps. The second heating coil in the cylinder is connected to a back-up heating source (gas/oil/electric boiler, heat pump or stove) to provide hot water when there isn’t enough sunshine.

Is my home suitable for solar thermal?

Ideally, solar collectors should be south-facing (south-east or south-west) and free of shade, at an angle of between 20 and 50 degrees, but east-west installations are also possible. Rooftop collectors are the most popular, but they can also be mounted at ground level on special frames. Roof mounted collectors are usually a ‘permitted development’, so  planning permission is not needed. Exceptions include National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, conservation areas and listed buildings.

Hot water cylinder is necessary for the system to work efficiently. Integration with a “combi” gas boiler (which heats the water on demand when you turn on a hot water tap) is possible.

How many collectors will I need?

Number of collectors closely corresponds with the size of hot water cylinder. As a rule of thumb, you will need 100 litres water capacity in the cylinder per 1 solar panel (approx 2 sq m). Typically, 100 litre of hot water is adequate for 1-2 people. Therefore, the most common systems comprise of 3 collectors and 300 litre twin coil hot water cylinders.

Which collector type should I chose?

There are two types of solar thermal collectors typically used in the UK: Flat panel and evacuated tube collectors. Both have their strength and weaknesses – for example, evacuated tubes perform better on cold sunny days and flat panels protrude less from the roof – but overall they deliver similar value for money.

How much hot water can solar thermal system produce?

A typical solar water heating system in the UK will produce between 40% and 70% of the hot water a household uses over the course of a year for showers etc. Specifically, our 2 flat panel collectors are producing 1549 kWh of heat per annum.

What’s the likely cost?

A typical solar thermal system mounted on a roof in the UK will cost between £4,500 and £5,000. These figures includes all the plumbing connections, scaffolding and labour cost.

2 flat panel complete solar thermal system supplied and installed by us will cost (on average – depending on building specifics) only £3,700 including VAT.
